Naxos Detuschland will release Pietro Massa’s new CD with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations BWV 988 on 7 February 2025.
Bach’s Goldberg Variations represent an outstanding example of Baroque variation technique. While the overall structure remains consistently in the main key of G major, each of the 30 variations has its own distinct character. The symmetrical setup (Aria + 15 variations | 15 variations + Aria) and the schematic internal division into ten groups of three variations each provide a framework for diverse musical expressions, crystallizing the Goldberg Variations as a timeless masterpiece in the piano repertoire.
Pietro Massa presents an interpretation characterized by a clear rhythmic structure. His approach to the agogic of the Goldberg Variations is based on two distinct tempos for the binary and ternary phrasing, interconnected by a Phi-proportion of 1.618, in accordance with the Golden Ratio. For the stylistic execution of the ornaments, he drew inspiration from the practices of Girolamo Frescobaldi and François Couperin.
